Sunday 3/5 and Monday 3/4
Our trip began with our departure from Collegiate at 12:30 pm Sunday. From Collegiate, we took a bus to Dulles International Airport where we would catch an overnight flight into Paris, France. In Paris, we had a connecting flight that would take us to Venice. We were tight on time in the Paris airport, but successfully caught our flight upon arriving at the gate in time for the final call.
Once we landed in Marco Polo Airport(located on the mainland near Venice), we met a student and teacher from the Liceo Classico Marco Foscarini who would accompany us on the 30 minute trip from the mainland to Venice aboard a boat.
Upon our arrival at our partner school, we met students from France and Spain who will be participating in the conference this weekend. We also got to meet many of the Italian students involved in planning the conference. We ate lunch as a group, toured the school, which included a demonstration in their physics museum, and then embarked on a journey to do some brief sight seeing in Venice.
Together, we navigated our way through the streets of Venice to reach the Fondaco Daie Tedeschi, a building constructed in the middle ages that now houses the stores of many globally famous and well respected fashion brands. We climbed the stairs to the top of the building where we were able to get a panoramic view of all of Venice. We could see the Rialto Bridge, Grand Canal, and Saint Marco’s square in addition to many other notable landmarks.
Afterwards, we headed back to the school and joined our Italian hosts for the rest of the night. We all agreed today was extremely exhausting due to jet lag and lack of sleep, however I don’t think it could have gone any better! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed meeting and speaking with the other international students as well as touring a new place. Nonetheless, all of us look forward to getting a good night’s rest and coming back tomorrow full of energy!
